Sweet and Sour Chickpeas
If you’re looking for a meatless recipe to add to your dinner menu, these Sweet and Sour Chickpeas will be your new favorite dish! These flavors are my favorite and this dish will leave you feeling satisfied after.
I love adding a meatless meal into the weekly meal plan rotation during the week. These Sweet and Sour Chickpeas are a great way to add a plant protein into your diet while still adding a lot of flavor to a dish. These are made with a handful of pantry ingredients that you may already have. Plus, chickpeas are great to keep around for an easy protein to top on salads, bowls or use when making these Sweet and Sour Chickpeas.
What you need for Sweet and Sour Chickpeas:
- Chickpeas: one thing that I always keep in the pantry is a can of chickpeas! They are super versatile and great to use as a protein for dishes.
- Garlic cloves: minced garlic is ideal in this recipe and sauce!
- Sriracha: the little bit of heat from the sriracha is one that I love. I use the Trader Joe’s sriracha and love it!
- Coconut Aminos: another go-to in a lot of sauces here at One Balanced Life. This is ideal in a sweet and sour recipe.
- Ketchup: another ingredient in a sweet and sour sauce!
- Rice Vinegar: I always keep rice vinegar in my pantry for sauces like this.
- Honey: a bit of sweetness from the honey that balances out perfectly with the sour ingredients.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: another pantry staple that’s perfect for adding in sauces.
- Tapioca Flour: this is something that I use a lot in thickening sauces! A little goes a long way and is great to use for this sauce
Can I use soy sauce instead of coconut aminos?
Yes! A good substitute for coconut aminos is soy sauce if you don’t have them on hand.
How to store and reheat:
I always recommend storing any food leftovers in sealed glass dishes. I like using these! When you go to reheat, just place this container in the microwave and reheat for a minute to a minute and a half until they are at a desired temperature. You will want to stir to mix the sauce up.
Different ways to switch these up:
- Top this sweet and sour chickpeas on your favorite rice! Some favorites are jasmine rice, brown rice or coconut rice.
- Add them to a warm salad!
- Place in lettuce cups
- Add roasted veggies on the side!
How to make Sweet and Sour Chickpeas:
- Start by rinsing and draining your chickpeas.
- Place pot of water on the stovetop to heat up to boil. Pour chickpeas into water and boil for 2-3 minutes until chickpeas aren’t as firm. Drain chickpeas.
- In pan, add a little avocado oil and pour in chickpeas on medium to low heat.
- In seperate bowl, combine all ingredients to make sauce (leaving out the tapioca). Prepare the tapioca with water in small separate bowl.
- Once all ingredients have been mixed together, pour sauce into the pan with chickpeas.
- Add tapioca flour (mixed with water) into the pan to thicken the sauce. You will want to continue to stir as this will thicken fast and can stick if you don’t stir!
- Once sauce begins to thicken, remove from the heat.
- Top on jasmine rice with fresh green onion on top.
